Bad Week for Racing in My World

1. CART cancelled the Phoenix Grand Prix scheduled for downtown Phoenix this November due to lack of sponsorship, etc. It was probably the right call, but it would have been a blast to watch the cars zoom through the downtown streets near where I work. That drive through the elevated 7th avenue portion near the baseball stadium is perfect for racing. Dammit. [Check out the sweet street map by clicking on the image to the left]

2. Tony Stewart (one of my favorite NASCAR drivers) is switching to Toyota next year. From the Charlotte Observer:
"Joe Gibbs Racing, which has fielded General Motors cars in NASCAR competition since the organization's inception in 1992, will move to Toyota beginning in 2008, The Charlotte Observer has learned. A news conference has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday at JGR's headquarters in Huntersville, N.C., where the official announcement is set to take place, sources said on Thursday. Officials with Toyota, JGR and Nextel Cup drivers Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin are scheduled to be in attendance. " For the record, Toyota sucks.

I guess I'll go to Manzanita tonight to wash out my sorrows with some dirt track racin' and beer with Ron.
